245 - Vimeo is targeting machinima now

AS OF THIS DAY, I WILL NOT UPLOAD VIDEOS TO VIMEO.
NEITHER SHOULD YOU.

I received mail from them that following "gameplay videos" by me (as they are not porn, hatemail or commercial advertising) were removed:

Rage & Rapture

The Scarlet Thorn
Chilled Escapism
Sunday Break

-update (16th sept, 13:15 GMT+2): more victims-
Final Warcraft VI
(DEFINITELY not machinima.. yeah right :D)
World of Advent Dropzone Fantasy
(well, this certainly is not machinima - no joking)

These non-machinima videos were removed too:
WoW GFX Setting Macros
BWL: The Last Ride (damn, that took long for them to notice)
Destination Naxxramas

The four first movies are in my book very clearly machinima. Even though they are people walking / flying stuff, I can honestly say that I did put some effort into making them.

I hate to do this to you - I always want to deliver possibilities to watch my videos in highest quality possible (in adidtion to downloading).

Vimeo will no longer be an option for me.
This sucks as much as the entire discography of Linkin Park played simultaneously!

update 17th september, 02:14 am Finland time:
Got an other mail from Vimeo..

Now they had decided that my movies were machinima after all and they are returned to the site..

Right.

They should indeed burn in hell. EPIXX is not removed... yet.

I liked that they supported various kinds of art so far, but it's always been a strange site anyway.

No need to waste 3-6 hours for uploading there anymore, at least for me.

I've had some problems with Vimeo aswell (my password gotted bugged after about 2 weeks, so i had to change even though i knew what i was). But what other HQ steam-uploading sites are there?

I might give it a go on my next movie, since it's not gameplay, but i have an idea similar to Limited Escapism vol. 0 and there could be some people walking in it... Argh!

I also had problems with Vimeo which made me unable to upload some of my projects etc.

Its kinda strange that Vimeo wont allow gameplay videos anymore..
The last streaming site left, that provide an fair quality must be Gametube i guess..

I wasn't alarmed when Vimeo posted their rules on their attitude to "gameplay videos", and explicitly allowed "machinima". It seemed quite sensible to me, and, in many ways, still does.

However, I think they've made a huge mistake here in removing your videos. They're clearly "machinima" by their own rules, and they're should be allowed to stay. At the very least they should have written to you asking you to remove your films, and allowing you to appeal, rather than just taking a draconian and unilateral action.

I'll be thinking hard before using Vimeo in future.

This is a real shame. It'd be hard to argue that the main four movies you list are pure gameplay videos. They're artistic works with artistic merit. The only similarity they have with gameplay videos is that they were created using a game. Sadly, for some people machinima, anymation and gameplay videos are interchangeable - they can't see any difference. It's for that reason that Vimeo's decision worried me when it was first annouced. I'm sorry that you've been a victim of it.

Since your work is clearly machinima and therefore meets the standards they themselves laid down, is it possible that a confused Vimeo staffer was a bit too quick with the delete key? And if so, what does that indicate for other machinima artists? And if not, then how exactly how is Vimeo going to decide what is and is not machinima, and how it differs from 'gameplay' videos?

Bunch of assholes...
Let's wait for Vreel to be up and see if they got more brain than bandwith.

I'm glad too see that they're back. Probably someone working there who felt that it was an artform and not just simple gameplay.

./wave

GameTube's still available :-)
I know it's not nearly as fashionable as other sites but it's still higher quality than most of them (800kb/s)

We're planning on releasing some sexy EPIX BANDWIDTH ULTRA HD LOL H264 MOVIES stuff pretty soon anyway (uh, like maybe 2 months from now ^^)!

Man, I am really sorry to see this happen to you. Your work is 100% fucking machinima. Is there some sort of appeal process? Perhaps we could send them a petition? I'd sign it in a minute.

Ricky: Actually they did put almost everything (the non-machinima was left out) back there.

Good thing there's some people with brains there. Glad they got it back up, Baron. Perhaps there is some hope. Still....what a dumb thing to do.
